For our friends the hikers, the Verdon is a wonderful playground, perfect for visiting the Gorges du Verdon and our Regional Nature Park in a different way. Whether you are a seasoned hiker in need of thrills or a family of holidaymakers wishing to wander through nature, the famous Gorges du Verdon as well as the more discreet Basses Gorges du Verdon will offer you a course that will meet your expectations. We thus propose you some examples of excursions which, we hope, will make your mouth water to try these sports experiences.
A quiet 1 hour walk over 3 kilometres, this charming promenade is the perfect choice for an outdoor picnic or to end a day of water sports activities with a little jaunt on the good old cows' floor. There are no difficulties to report on this route, so you can go there with your family in complete safety. The starting point is near the village of Palud-sur-Verdon, less than an hour's drive from the campsite.
The plus : The interest of this walk remains the possibility to visit the village of Châteauneuf-lès-Moustiers, abandoned after the First World War and which was formerly part of the beautiful Provencal villages that made the reputation of the region. The inhabitants of the surrounding area try to preserve the buildings to keep the memory of this typical Provencal village, especially its medieval castle of the 12th century. The highest point offers superb panoramas of the surroundings with the Verdon Canyon that can be seen in the distance.
A 4-hour hike over almost 11 kilometres. It is the ideal route if you want to discover the superb artificial lake of Sainte Croix which is the pride of this corner of the Haut Var and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. It is a little more difficult than the previous one, especially at the level of a rocky part with potentially slippery walls, especially in wet weather, that you have to cross to reach the path. The starting point is from the village of Bauduen which is only 5 minutes by car from our campsite.
The plus: The access to the path is at the nautical base and runs along the water, so you can get there from your pedal boat or kayak activity! Take advantage of the magnificent trails under the shady pines as well as the superb view of Lake Sainte-Croix, its crystal clear waters and its monumental dam in the distance. You will come across a few beaches along the lake during your trip, so don't forget your swimsuit if you feel like taking a dip in the turquoise water. There is nothing better than swimming after a hard effort.
The Bauduen tour was not enough for you and you still want to enjoy the view of Lake St. Croix? Then get ready for the Ascent of Grand Margès. Count 5h30 and 12 kilometres of walking to complete this route. The trail is considered difficult notably because of the greater vertical drop to be faced, 900 meters of both positive and negative vertical drop. The starting point will be at Aiguines, a small Provencal village located between Baudune and Moustiers Sainte Mairie, 20 minutes by car from the campsite.
The plus: The reward for triumphing over this real adventure course will be offered to you after reaching the summit of Grand Margès perched at nearly 1577 metres. Beware of vertigo! The result is a breathtaking viewpoint, perfect for embracing the entire department of the Alps with the Gorges du Verdon and the lake of Ste Croix and its emerald water below. All you have to do is enjoy the descent.
Classified as a very difficult hike, it is aimed at experienced hikers, especially during the descent which is done off-trail. The complete tour lasts an average of 7 hours for a distance of 17 kilometers with nearly 1000 meters of positive and 1000 meters of negative elevation gain. Strong sensations guaranteed! It is reached via the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon, which is an hour's drive from the campsite.
The best thing about it: you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the entire Alpes de Haute Provence region. On a clear day you can even see the Mercantour, the Ecrins, the Vercors, the Mont Ventoux, the Sainte-Victoire, the Sainte-Baume, the Haut-Var and even the Côte d'Azur! If you are lucky, you will be able to see the griffon vultures circling above your head, completing the impression of having found a real little corner of paradise in the middle of nature on this sublime spot. It will then be time to return carefully to the descents, escorted by the raptors and with your head full of unforgettable images.
