The feet in the clear water of the lake of Sainte-Croix, Bauduen, warms its old stone walls and pink tiles in the sun of Provence. For holidaymakers who come to discover the Pays du Verdon and its Regional Natural Park, Bauduen offers many activities: walks in the shady streets, relaxing moments on the shores of the lake, water sports or hiking to discover the surroundings. To guide you, here is a list of things not to be missed!
Bauduen is first of all a stage on the Roman road of Plancus which linked Fréjus to Riez. In the Middle Ages, the village prospered and extended in an arc of a circle, so as to follow the contours of the hill of the Defense which overhangs the dwellings. Bauduen is equipped with fortifications including a watchtower and a feudal castle.
Centuries later, in 1962, when the project to flood the Salles valley to make a dam lake was proposed by EDF, the inhabitants expressed their anger: according to the plans, Bauduen would be submerged. They finally won their case when it was decided to lower the water level to 482, thus preventing the village and the village of Sainte-Croix from disappearing into the sea.
Now bordering the shore of the lake of Sainte-Croix, Bauduen is open to tourists who have come to discover Haute Provence and the Gorges du Verdon. Nevertheless, the medieval village has managed to keep its charm and authenticity without turning into a noisy and overcrowded seaside resort.
Before setting off on your adventure, take the time to stroll through the shady streets under the Provencal sun. An ancient medieval village, Bauduen has preserved the traces of its past. You will therefore be able to admire the ruins of the feudal castle but also the ramparts and the seigniorial castle, which date from the 16th century. Afterwards, lose yourself in the picturesque alleys and staircases that make up the village, paying attention to the beautiful houses with mullioned windows that line the rue Longue. You will finally reach the pebble beach with its superb view of the lake and its emerald-coloured water, the next stop on your journey.
Feel like diving a head into the turquoise water? Bauduen has its own beach, even if it remains quite busy during the July-August period. Don't panic, there are many other beaches all around the artificial lake such as Galetas, Les Salles Sur Verdon or Moustiers Sainte Marie, where swimming is supervised. However, smaller, more discreet and beautiful beaches are accessible after passing the nautical centre of Bauduen.
This museum is first of all a huge collection of Playmobils of a Bauduen resident that she inherited from her former husband, a professor of plastic arts. This museum is therefore an opportunity to exhibit this gigantic troop of figurines in order to show that art is not just for galleries and that any medium can be used to express one's creativity. Pushing the doors of this former presbytery, you can admire several dioramas presenting a multitude of these toys with for each painting a worked out scenography. It's a perfect visit to make with your family!
Do you want to discover the surroundings of the village and explore the shores of Lake Ste Croix, the pearl of the Alpes de Haute Provence region? Then opt for the Bauduen circuit. This 4-hour hike will take you through almost 11 kilometres of different environments, each one as exceptional as the next. Rocky cliffs, pine forests and breathtaking views of the lake and its dam are on the program. You will come across a few beaches along the lake during your trip, so don't forget your swimsuit if you feel like taking a dip in the turquoise water.
