All the charm of the Provenšal traditions

Beautiful village of 2000 inhabitants, Aups is a place that breathes the charm of the Provence Alpes Côtes d'Azur region.  This village of character is located at the gates of the Verdon on the first foothills of the Alps, within the Regional Natural Park and south of Lake Sainte-Croix.  Having preserved its medieval heritage, don't hesitate to stroll through its shady streets lined with beautiful Provencal houses and renovated bastides.  Discover the various historical monuments that the town has, but also its traditional shops nestled between the houses (butcher's and delicatessen, fishmonger's, baker's, cutlery, etc.).

Prefer to visit Aups on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, the days of the Provencal market where you can taste the famous black truffles.

A bit of history

This small village of the department of Var enters history when Julius Caesar, then seeking to carve a road to invade the Gauls, conquered it and would have pronounced the famous sentence: "I would rather be the first in Aups than the second in Rome".  Aups is also known to have been one of the main hotbeds of protest in Haute-Provence over the centuries, whether during the Wars of Religion, the Revolution, the coup d'état of Napoleon III or the Nazi occupation.

Today Aups is a peaceful village, famous for its vineyards and olive groves and has many places of interest.

Truffle House

Installed in the former Saint-Jacques hospice in the heart of the village, the Maison de la Truffe is proof of Aups' reputation as the capital of the "black diamond".  Embark on an adventure for young and old, beginners and enthusiasts, who will have to use all their senses to discover this piece of history and land that is the truffle in the history of Haute Provence.

Numerous interactive games but also testimonies of producers and scientists will be on the program.  If this makes your mouth water, then head to the shop or opt for the "gourmet visit" option which will conclude your tour with a truffle tasting and a glass of wine to accompany it.  If the challenge does not scare you, then get ready for the escape game " La Truffe d'Or " where you will have to go in search of the Truffle forged by the Gods and stolen by Hades.

Faykod Museum

The Gorges du Verdon are not enough to give you a change of scenery?  Then go to this exceptional place to discover the dreamlike universe of Maria de Faykod.  This renowned artist, a graduate of the Beaux-Arts in Paris, exposes about thirty sculptures in a beautiful park with trees in the open air.

You will be able to walk at your own pace and admire anonymous silhouettes draped in marble, peaceful faces or strange hybrids, between man and shell.  Upon reservation, you will even be able to visit the artist's studio to learn a little more about how such works of art are made.

The Oil Mill Shop

Located near the main square, this shop is a real institution in Aups.  For three generations, this mill has been producing one of the best olive oils in the PACA region and has won an impressive number of awards, including numerous gold medals at the Salon de l'Agriculture.  The shop will enable you to buy olive oil, but also to discover other products from the Var region: tapenades, olive wood objects, artisanal soaps, etc.

A visit of the mill is proposed to you free of charge with the key to a tasting for the pleasure of your taste buds.  Discover the method of production, from the picking of the olives to the cold extraction of the juice, mixing tradition and modernity in order to offer a product of ever more exceptional quality.

Stroll around Aups

Do you want to discover this green Provence that you've heard so much about?  Then go and discover the walks that Aups offers.  We recommend the one passing above Aups by La Peirère.  Departing from La Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Délivrance, it will take you on a 7-kilometre loop around the village for an average duration of 2h30.

This hike is classified as easy and therefore suitable for the whole family.  Go and meet the landscapes that make Haute Provence such a typical place.  You will be able to see the hills and olive groves that are the pride of the Provencal region, look for the chapels nested in the caves, and take a well-deserved break in the shade of the pine forests in the middle of nature.
