Lake Castillon is located between Castellane to the south and St André les Alpes to the north. It stretches for 8 km and is one of the most popular holiday villages in the country. The water from the dam plays a crucial role in the production of electricity. Put your bags down and enjoy the beauty of the lake's turquoise waters.
A turquoise colour, the lake of Castillon is located in the heart of the Verdon Natural Park. It is located to the north of the village of Castellane, in the department of Alpes-de-haute-provence. It takes second place, behind the Sainte Croix lake, in the ranking of the largest artificial lakes in the PACA region.
The lake is the result of the construction of the Castillon dam. It was impounded in 1948. The dam favours the production of hydroelectric energy in a natural constriction of the Cheiron hill. The rampart took 20 years to build. A road crosses it and offers an unobstructed view of the Verdon river flowing downstream. The dam is more than 200 metres wide and 95 metres long and is adorned with a large sundial.
The lake is the largest of its kind in Europe.
The yellow lake in the regional nature park is a meeting place for adventure-seeking holidaymakers. Its many water sports activities also attract nature lovers. It is a few kilometres long, 100 metres deep in places and has a volume of 150 million cubic metres of water.
The lake has 3 secluded beaches: the Cheiron bay, the Touron beach and the Plan beach in Saint André les Alpes. The Cheiron bay is located not far from the town of Castellane. Water sports enthusiasts will find their happiness in the practice of paddleboats, canoes and kayaks.
