A holiday on the shores of Lake Castillon

Put your bags down and enjoy the beauty of the lake's turquoise waters.

Holidays on the shores of Lake Castillon

Lake Castillon is located between Castellane to the south and St André les Alpes to the north. It stretches for 8 km and is one of the most popular holiday villages in the country. The water from the dam plays a crucial role in the production of electricity. Put your bags down and enjoy the beauty of the lake's turquoise waters.

Urban Park is a great place to visit.

An artificial water reservoir

A turquoise colour, the lake of Castillon is located in the heart of the Verdon Natural Park. It is located to the north of the village of Castellane, in the department of Alpes-de-haute-provence. It takes second place, behind the Sainte Croix lake, in the ranking of the largest artificial lakes in the PACA region.

The lake is the result of the construction of the Castillon dam. It was impounded in 1948. The dam favours the production of hydroelectric energy in a natural constriction of the Cheiron hill. The rampart took 20 years to build. A road crosses it and offers an unobstructed view of the Verdon river flowing downstream. The dam is more than 200 metres wide and 95 metres long and is adorned with a large sundial.

The lake is the largest of its kind in Europe.

The yellow lake in the regional nature park is a meeting place for adventure-seeking holidaymakers. Its many water sports activities also attract nature lovers. It is a few kilometres long, 100 metres deep in places and has a volume of 150 million cubic metres of water.

Longer than the rest of the world, the lake is a great place to relax.

The must-see beaches of Lake Castillon

The lake has 3 secluded beaches: the Cheiron bay, the Touron beach and the Plan beach in Saint André les Alpes. The Cheiron bay is located not far from the town of Castellane. Water sports enthusiasts will find their happiness in the practice of paddleboats, canoes and kayaks.

The beach of Touron and the beach of Plan de Saint André les Alpes

The Touron beach is home to motor boats. You can take motorboat courses or just relax by the crystal clear water. The shaded lawn invites you to take a nap and have a picnic.

The beach of Plan de la Plagne is a great place to relax.

The beach at Plan Saint André les Alpes is perfect for summer holidays. It offers swimming and sailing in the warm coloured waters. You can also practice paddleboat and paddleboard.

The lake of Castillo is a very popular destination for tourists.

At the end of the day, the fishers will have a chance to see the fish.

Walk with the whole family and climb to the top of the lake to see the beauty of the surroundings. The hiking and mountain bike trails take you into the heart of the wilderness. Hikers contemplate the statues and temples of the Mandarom sect in the north of Castellane.

The walks around Castellane are very popular.

Walks around the lake offer a breathtaking view of its picturesque landscape. After a full day, escape to camping in the Verdon Gorge. Among the accommodation on offer, you can rent gites, guest rooms or a camper van. Some of them have quality services, such as: a children's playground, a wifi connection, a private terrace, etc.

The towns around Lake Castillon

The two beautiful perched villages of France: Saint Julien de Verdon and Saint André les Alpes border the lake of Castillon. Saint Julien du Verdon is nestled in the hillside. It looks out over the warm waters of the lake and the whole of the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region. Its picturesque streets are quiet. There is a serene atmosphere.

Holidaymakers love the Provencal commune of Saint André les Alpes. The holiday village has a large water sports centre, which is ideal for water sports activities.
